Hispanics are becoming more Protestant. Furman University political scientist James Guth and his co-authors discovered that in the Latino population there is one Protestant for every two Catholics. Hispanic Protestants split their vote evenly between the Democrats and the GOP in 2004, with conservative Hispanic evangelicals backing George W. Bush to the tune of almost 80%. This, rather than Latino Catholic support, is what accounted for much of Bush’s 40% support among Hispanic voters. The ranks of Protestant Hispanics are growing: work colleagues and I have done with the General Social Survey (GSS) shows that as many as 10% of Hispanics raised as Catholics had switched to Protestantism by 2006.A Question Evolution! Generally speaking, in Latin America it is evangelical and pentecostal Christianity which is experiencing rapid growth. In addition, evangelical Christians tend to favor biblical creationism more than Roman Catholics.
A redacted excerpt of a recent email from a supporter of the Question Evolution! Campaign:
Dear XXXX,
Thanks for getting back to me about the ...Question Evolution! Campaign booklet which focuses on the 15 questions for evolutionists....
Also, later today, I will be taking another stab at finding one or more Spanish translators for the campaign through my...connections with Spanish churches. Our Spanish translator in Peru became very sick and I am not sure how long his sickness will last. I will also be contacting a pastor with connections with people in the Philippines and American Filipinos.
XXXX and John, you never know who God may cause to cross your paths. Keep your eyes open for a potential Spanish translator of the Question Evolution! Campaign.
Lastly, later this month and in December, we will be contacting 170+ creationists organizations in North America about the campaign plus possibly doing a publicity campaign. Hopefully, the holiday season won't bog us down too much.
Sincerely,
XXXXXX XXXXXXX
