Hosting your own website gives you more options and flexibility plus more control of your website. Using free software which can be set up yourself or by a company that builds websites, a beginner can add content to a website easily.

If you pursue this option WordPress is a great and popular package to set up your website. It is also Google friendly (so you can get free web traffic from Google and other search engines) when used in conjunction with WordPress SEO by Yoast or All in One SEO Pack. Two free Google friendly alternatives to WordPress when it comes to building a website are Joomla and ModX. The free software packages of WordPress, Joomla, and ModX are often referred to as content management systems and they are great software solutions because they allow newbies to manage websites.

Although WordPress is used for blogs, it is also customizable so you can use it to set up websites that do not look like blogs at all.

WordPress also has some great forum plugins available that you can add on to your website plus it is easy to add a WordPress blog to your Wordpress website.
